HEADSHOT RESOURCES
What Makes a Headshot Photo Look Professional?
Not all headshots are created equal. Here's what separates a truly professional corporate portrait from a photo that just looks like it was taken by a professional.
It Starts With the Light
Professional photography lighting is the single biggest differentiator between a polished headshot and a casual photo. Studio strobes create soft, even illumination that flatters facial features, eliminates harsh shadows, and produces a clean, consistent look across every subject.
Natural light can work, but it's inconsistent — it changes with cloud cover, time of day, and location. For corporate headshots where you need every employee to look consistent, controlled studio lighting is essential.
The Background Matters
A clean, neutral backdrop — white, grey, or dark — removes visual distractions and focuses attention on the subject. Textured office backgrounds, windows, and busy environments can work in certain contexts, but they require more careful execution.
For team headshots especially, consistency of background is critical. If half the team has a white backdrop and half has a dark grey, the photos will never look cohesive on your website.
Camera and Lens Choice
Professional cameras and portrait lenses produce a shallower depth of field — that subtle background blur that separates the subject from the backdrop. This is a visual cue that signals professional photography, even if the viewer can't articulate why.
Smartphone cameras have improved dramatically, but they still struggle with this effect at close distances.
The Edit
Post-processing is where a good photo becomes a great one. Professional retouching means:
- Consistent color grading across all photos
- Skin tone correction without looking airbrushed
- Exposure balancing
- Subtle blemish removal
- Sharpening eyes without over-processing
Posing and Direction
The best headshot photographers don't just point a camera at you and press the button. They direct you — adjusting your chin angle, shoulder position, and expression to find the most flattering version of your natural look.
This is a skill. It's why experienced photographers produce consistently better results than anyone with an expensive camera.
